ARKENWALK – WALK THE LINE

ARKENWALK is an ambition to unite art and city with a path that anchors Arken Museum as the town’s urban generator. By laying out a red thread, we connect the two ends – the station and the museum – and stimulate new communities and relationships between the art institution and the area’s residents.

FACTS
Client: Ishøj Municipality, Realdania, Arken
Program: Path, urban space
Location: Ishøj, Denmark
Type: Competition proposal
Area: 2.2 km stretch from Ishøj Station to Arken Museum
Team: THIRD NATURE, EKJ, Boris Brorman Jensen, Ingvar Cronhammar and ForTheLoveOfLight
Period: 2018. Completed.

ARKENWALK connects Ishøj Station with Arken Museum and marks a course that intuitively leads visitors back and forth. The project is based on one overall plan that not only connects the two ends but links the remaining and independent urban typologies in Ishøj.

The plan is drawn in a robust and recognizable red material, linked to the mood of Arken’s own inner axis. It is a path that catches attention and gets people on the move. A red carpet that in different ways seizes the urban space and manifests itself as an urban space where new neighborhoods and relationships can arise between the art institution, visitors and residents of the area. The concept WALK THE LINE

consists of fields and linkages; the fields reinforce the existing urbantypologies and the connecting links convey transitions and establish meeting places for new communities along the path. Through the red landscape, special spaces arise such as the forest, green terraces, furnishing, communal gardens and houses that can be used as meeting places, for play, rest and stay.

ARKENWALK becomes a flying carpet through the area, with local stops along the way, where people can get on or off. A path with focal points and an eventful navigation instrument that at eye level connects everyday life with the art and nature of Ishøj.

WARM MATERIAL
Our wish was to create both a sensuous, aesthetic and thought-provoking materiality for Arkenwalk which in its nature and production is a modern, industrial and robust material.

We want to showcase a climate-optimized composition of concrete that expresses both a sensuous and futuristic material. By replacing a part of the cement with bio ash, and by mixing it with crushed brick, limestone and other mineral “waste materials”, we have lowered the climate impact noticeably and avoided further mineral extraction.

Fly ash is already used today as part of the concrete mixes. Fly ash is a waste product from coal-fired power plants. Bio ash, on the other hand, can be extracted from the sludge coming from sewage treatment, together with phosphorus, which is a precious and scarce material. Due to its content of iron, the bio ash has a deep red color, – the same reason why our blood is red. The higher the proportion of bio ashes in the concrete mix, the clearer the reddish color gets the concrete, and of course the higher the CO2 reduction becomes. We talk about 15-30% savings depending on the quality of the ash and the concrete product.
