VINGE

Vinge is not just inspired by nature, it is a city which works with nature’s processes and creates nature.Nature and city are usually explained as opposites, but in Vinge they work together. Vinge Station and the station district are a unique development, where nature and city are mixed into a Vinge-esque typology. Integrating the best of the two worlds creates the framework for a unique and exciting life for the residents of Vinge.

THE PROJECT
Vinge’s identity follows the values and characteristics that already exist in the Danish countryside, located close to the Roskilde Fjord on the outskirts of Copenhagen. The hilly terrain and beautiful nature create a direct interaction with the infrastructure network that outlines of the city.

With Roskilde Fjord to the West and a protected marsh and lake area to the East, Vinge is framed by nature, giving the city a close relationship with the surrounding landscape. The regional train line that runs between Copenhagen and Frederikssund acts as a natural starting point for the future city center of Vinge.

THE GREEN HEART
Running centrally through the station is The Green Heart, a landscape corridor that crosses Vinge from North to South. The train station becomes the center for the city, with the neighboring buildings offering a varied spatial hierarchy and intimacy around the urban disc. The buildings house a range of functions, including residential, commercial, public institutions, private companies and retailers. The Green Heart integrates the existing natural elements with future urban functions, and it is here that a fusion between nature and city begins.

It brings together the city’s social activities in green surroundings and forms a seamless space that gives Vinge its unique natural clarity and identity. The city’s train station, the school’s playing fields, children’s playgrounds, residents’ kitchen gardens, the city’s indoor swimming pool, event spaces and sports all contribute to the life of The Green Heart. On foot and by bicycle, it would be the natural and fastest route through the city.

Stationen

VINGE STATION
The natural focal point of the master plan is the S-train station and the circular urban space (also known as the Landscape Bridge). Vinge’s station is placed naturally, at the intersection of The Green Heart and the tracks. The station is the focal point of the city’s dense and lively center, where users experience a mix of city and marshland on one side, with forest on the other.

In the urban space around the station, city life and nature merge, creating unique spatial qualities not before seen in Denmark, where terrain, nature and buildings collide. The station’s location is an integral part of The Green Heart, and provides Vinge with a social context from the start, a connection that will only grow and strengthen over time.

COMPOSITION
The core idea behind the masterplan for Vinge Centrum is to create a dense city with varied urban characteristics, combined with spaces that offer the potential for the best life and urban nature. The masterplan affords a high degree of variation in block sizes, façade treatments and spaciousness between residences. This is achieved through a range of treatments, by rotating, overlapping and displacing the built structures to create an urban Klondike, with wide degrees of complexity.
There are grand and intimate spaces, passageways, gates, courtyards, squares and truly natural areas interwoven between the precise building volumes. The buildings are different in height, typology and expression. Long and monotonous facades are avoided throughout. The change in building heights within neighborhoods creates individual identities within the different communities. The focus is directed towards the relationships of Vinge – between the inside and outside, and between private and public areas. The edge zones, such as private gardens, are designed based on their location and along solar passive principles.

BUILDING VOLUMES
The building layouts and organization of the districts makes it possible to divide the city into smaller land parcels, all of which are rational construction fields ready for development. The Development Plan illustrates that if required, the area can be divided even further, into smaller lots that maintain the relationship with the urban network and infrastructure. Formally, Vinge Centrum offers buildings that range from 2 to 8 story’s in height, and between 20 and 50 meters in length.

From large perimeter courtyard blocks and commercial atrium buildings to townhouses and tower blocks. The buildings grow in height towards the center, and the changing heights contribute to a variety of spatial experiences, helping to emphasize the topographical conditions of the site. The varying heights make it possible to ensure good daylight conditions both inside and between residences.

VARIATION AND ROBUSTNESS
The masterplan hosts a large degree of robustness, with the potential to be adapted or reconfigured without losing its special qualities. This diversity within the cityscape helps to strengthen our sense of place and belonging, on both a micro and macro level. In Vinge, the architectural variation of buildings supports and reinforces the unique Vinge City DNA, which is based on diversity across all layers of the city.

Architectural variation is therefore an important parameter that provides a lot of freedom in the development and design of individual buildings.

CLIMATE ADAPATION
The climatic starting point in Vinge Centrum is that rainwater is an active and recreational part of the future city. Therefore, both ponds for retention and open LAR valleys form important and visible elements within the plan. The design of the basins is varied, in order to capture the maximum volume of water possible, whilst ensuring the water remains a visible and recreational element within the cityscape.

Around the station, the inclination of surfaces shifts, creating different situations based on the desired expression and needs. The surface can be populated in a range of ways, from flat green slopes to planting beds and stairs. The design of these elements works to promote a new type of play, whilst also acting as a catalyst in the natural evaporation of rainwater.

OPTIMISED MICROCLIMATE
The sustainable city takes its microclimate seriously. City’s gain an exponentially higher value when the urban spaces are comfortable and pleasant for large portions of the year. The organization of buildings means that the wind will always been softened, creating protected pockets through the lack of long, accelerating passages.

he powerful prevailing winds from the West and South West have had a particularly relevant focus in the organization of Vinge. These considerations also work towards ensuring the maximum amount of sun penetration in the urban spaces throughout the city.

BIODIVERSITY
In the broadest sense, Vinge is about creating good conditions for life, and thus finding the ideal balance between city residents and nature. Plant species are combined, creating beautiful expressions and experiences throughout the year.

Simultaneously, the diverse flora creates a platform for multiple habitats for the local fauna. The nature of Vinge is characterized by a wild expression, with a rich diversity of species and low level of maintenance – it is a robust nature with the highest experience value.
