VRIDSLØSELILLE STATE PRISON

The isolated Vridsløselille State Prison is rethought inside out to become an active and integrated part of the surrounding city life in Albertslund. The prison is transformed into a cultural center where the existing buildings get new functions, both large halls and small workshops that can create new social meetings and communities.

FACTS
Client: Freja Ejendomme and Albertslund Municipality
Program: Masterplan, Transformation, conversion and extension to prison
Location: Albertslund, Denmark
Type: Vision – idea proposal. Invited parallel assignment.
Area: Site 16.5 ha. Prison approximately 26,000 m2.
Team: THIRD NATURE
Period: 2016, pending. The prison will not be transformed for the time being and is still owned by the State Prison in Vridsløselille.

THIRD NATURE has created a new vision for Vridsløselille State Prison for Freja Ejendomme and Albertslund Municipality, where the former prison is transformed into a cultural and social gathering point in the city. Our proposal is based on the opposition between an original building structure, that was meant to create total isolation of the prisoners and the desire to reinterpret this framework to become a livable and integrated urban environment. The goal has been to create a flexible and holistic plan that lifts the eye over the prison’s surrounding wall and strengthens the social, climatic and landscape cohesive force in Albertslund. Our wish has been to give Freja Ejendomme and Albertslund Municipality a visionary as well as
concrete proposal on how the development of Vridsløselille State. Prison can happen on a planning-, landscape- and architectural level.

We join flexible and functional parameters in a new holistic architectural idea where the wall is staged as a positive and robust structuring element. The main building and the prison wall are used as a positive catalyst for creating public functions and cultural offerings for all citizens of the city. Here you will find a greenhouse, sports facilities, a museum, creative workshops, rooms for workshops among other things. Art installations will be integrated into the existing and have recreational purposes such as perfomance halls and an amphitheater.

BUILDING SITES AND BUILDINGS

The overall idea in the plan is to create a dense city with varied urban characters and spaces filled with possibilities for a good urban life and urban nature. The qualities of the new development plan are provided through a high degree of variation in building sizes, facade expressions and spatiality between the houses. This is achieved by rotating, overlapping and displacing the building bodies in different ways creating great variation in the area. Formally the plan is structured with an encircling building zone with a number of varied building

volumes ranging from 2 to 9 floors – from townhouses to terraced houses, from low long structures to high point houses. The varying heights also make it possible to ensure good daylight conditions both in the spaces between the houses and in the individual housing units. Due to the great variety, a robustness is achieved which makes it possible to adapt or reconfigure the plan to new needs without losing its quality.

CONNECTIONS AND NATURAL MOVEMENT

To achieve the desired accessibility and activity in the plan, we propose a visible path that runs along a climate-adapted terrain, as a connecting landscape. The paths both serve as adaptation, accessibility and as an eventful element in the plan. At the intersection of the central Albertslund, we propose a circular space formation in connection with a new undercarriage under the train tracks. The idea is

that the new space integrates existing and future city functions and that this is where there is a fusion of prison grounds, station area and city in all four quadrants. Here, social activities are gathered in urban surroundings, that give the station area a special clarity and identity and becomes the natural and fastest route through the city.
