VÆRLØSE AIRFIELD – SOUTH CAMP

Værløse Airfield has great potential for creating a grounded everyday life with nature at its core. By making new and existing communities as well as nature experiences to a common base for the development of South Camp, we have challenged and shaped the physical framework, making the bond between Værløse Airfield, Måløv and Jonstrup stronger.

The South Camp, the southern part of Værløse Airfield, lies on the edge of a lush area and the residential area around Jonstrup and Måløv with a wonderful view over the former airfield and the rolling landscape towards north and around the northern camp, the lake, Søndersø, and Kirke Værløse. The approximate 75 ha. area, which spans about 1,5 km from east to west, is only a 20 minutes drive from Copenhagen Townhall Square.
Today there is more than 1,8 mil. citizens in the capital, and over the next 10 years it is expected to rise with another 100.000 settlers in the capital region. Værløse Airfield is therefore an ideal choice to develop, with its versatile and magnificent nature, and due to it being close to Copenhagen it will be an attractive place to live in the future.

COHERENCE, NATURE, CULTURE AND IDENTITY
Most of all The South Camp has an unmatched potential to create the frame for the upcoming generations outstanding everyday lives. The cultural historical terrain and the unique Neighbourhood at Værløse Airfield serves as the base for a scenic uniqueness and storyline, which can lure visitors and citizens from the entire region.

The large landscape north of the Southern Camp, with the more than 3 kilometer long airstrip, the characteristic landscape and F‐16 shelters makes up a recreative nature area, which has the size of the Hermitage Hunting Lodge surrounding area and amenity value.

A NEW LANDSCAPE DISTRICT
The masterplan of the South Camp is developed based on the existing buildings and structures, an interconnectivity of the green area, an infrastructure built on a main dividing road and a row of shared spaces housing roads called “riem and suspenders”. The individual housing areas uniqueness has its offspring from the existing buildings, topography and the experiences of the landscape in the area.

Sustainability represents an integrated part of the masterplan for The South Camp. Recycling the existing buildings and the existing road infrastructure will basically decrease the resources the area uses. Intertwining the green areas creates passages and habitats for flora and fauna and supports the diversity of the area.

The South Camp will be able to offer housing with a significant landscape and social scope. The proposal consists of taking the community seriously, and presenting new ways to live close together. There will be opportunities to live in bunches with the neighbors, without stepping on each others toes.
The biggest potential in the area is the surroundings, and especially drawing the landscape in the the individual houses.

THE MOVIE SET
The Movie Set is located in the two biggest studios in the Scandinavia in the old aircraft hangars and is the production facility for both TV, film, commercials, shows, and tv-series. The Movie Set is expected to contribute to a vibrant creative environment, where artists, film people, actors, designer and architects can be during their everyday lives. The creative business area will make the foundation for an urban life, which if not for Værløse Airfield would be far away, and is also an ideal manager of a large part of the valuable housing complex in the area, because film production can have the joy of the big hangers.

In the middle of the Movie Set there will established a series of urban spaces, which for the most of the year can give the residence and visitor direct access to an exciting environment around the Movie Set. At the same time there will be a framework for establishing café areas with bars, cinema, educational institutes and galleries, etc.

TYPES OF NATURE
The nature around the South Camp consists of several types of nature. The most distinguished is the open and low areas with grass meadows and grassland, the high areas creating shelter with a mixture of forest and the lower lying areas with wetlands, marsh, lake and stream. These types of nature intertwine and are spread over the entire area. North of the South Camp there is the old military landing strip, a great nature area with a visual view of the South Camp. The surroundings are in general rich on nature- and water elements. East of the area lies Møllemosen, a wetland, which connects Møllemosen via ‘Værebro’ to ‘Bringe Mose’ and south of the area lies Nature Park Måløv.

The South Camp has many existing green and blue qualities, and a stream of potentials. By strengthening and expanding the green area and create better connections there can be a better coherency to the area, which makes the area even greener and more attractive for the area future residence as well as for visitors. The landscape is a massive and a highly unused potential. With a varying terrain with hilltops, slopes and low areas it is possible to create a landscape that is sustainable, rich in experiences and cohesive for the new housing types at the airfield.
