URBAN CARPET – NEW STATION IN LUND

The station at Klostergården is a visionary infrastructural project that shows how the construction of a new station can lift up and rethink an entire neighborhood in a city. In connection to Lund municipality’s plans of developing the area, the station will leverage an urban vision. The project has a clear and simple concept – Urban Carpet – that will create identity, intensity and new connections.

Kort

Lund was founded around year 990 and is one of Scandinavia’s oldest cities. The city is known for its large university and status as a religious centre through centuries. Due to the good train connections in the city, Lund is close connected to Malmö, Copenhagen and Sweden in general.
The new station at Klostergården is a result of an ambitious expansion of the train capacity between Lund and Malmö. There will be established two new train tracks, meaning that there will be four tracks going between the two cities. This will create new opportunities for creating the new stop at Klostergården resulting in the connection of the southern part of Lund to the regional railway traffic.

Diagrammer

The project is going to be a traffic and urban related center that will give strength to the entire neighborhood. The new station opens up for a rethinking of the area and is to become a new hub in the quarter. As it is now, the neighborhood appears fragmentized and divided by train tracks and by the surrounding defined functional areas of industry, housing and public functions.
The station will not only be an important traffic nerve center between car, bus and train traffic, but will also be a new local meeting point. The station will create a distinctly connection across the railroad and will create opportunities to drag activities along, across the existing surroundings. This will make opportunities for new function-based connections whilst adding a new clearer identity to the area.

Sammenhænge og samlingspunkter

The project consists of a station, a landscape project and a connection under the railway. All these components will be grabbed and combined in one design proposal – Urban Carpet. Urban carpet communicates the transition to the existing city and between station and tunnel – this is where the new centre will unfold.

The surrounding pedestrian and bicycle path will secure a good and safe access to the platforms and connect the platform level to the tunnel with help from a big oval ring that will also be functioning as a boundary for the project. The size of the oval shape is controlled by the slope of the paths. The existing paths are attached on the shape so the intersections and connections are conducted in a safe way whilst creating good overview conditions.

Designlogik

Urban Carpet is an elevated hilly landscape. In terms of the design there are plenty of opportunities for fun, breaks and rest. Urban Carpet consists of an outer green part – the urban forest- and an inner paved area, which will be having functions for games and fun, breaks, amphitheater, bike racks and skater areas.
The landscape creates a host of functions that smoothly will be integrated with each other on the connecting special surface that is surrounded by nature. In this way, there will occur a green flexible and playful city centre which will attract the citizens and create options for interaction across age and interests.
