THE ISLAND OF THE CITY

Papirøen has a unique placement in at the inner part of Copenhagen harbour. There is a lot of potential on this prime location setting the bar high on the subject of Copenhagen future city- and nature developments. We are in the center of everything here. Having the historical part of town to the south and towards north will be the new districts of Copenhagen. This is where land and sea meet with the Papirøen in the heart of it all.

“ He had seen how a city assembled at the square and spread afterwards again. His journeys had shown him what a city was, and now he wanted one at the harbour, a city by the Baltic sea, a shore side city, and it would come! Between the willow bushes on Holmen he thought of furnaces and towards the thicket and swamp slowly turning into an old dense forest around the lakes, will be a harbour where there will be battlements and towers. All the worlds masts in the harbour!” (The ship by Johannes V. Jensen)

SituationsplanOptimeringer

THE ISLAND OF THE CITY
The first settlers in Copenhagen settled near the shore. This way they locals craftsmen, fishermen and peasants could trade meat their goods from their small stands. Since the time of Absalon the harbour has had significant changes. It has exponentially grown and the industrial business’ have changed and adapted with the times. Today the harbour is a symbol of transformation and urban renewal. Although there are still clear traces of the pragmatic past. Today Papirøen, in its temporary state, generates dynamic urban atmosphere which is the starting point for the new urbanisation process.
The current welcoming atmosphere will be the foundation for the renewal of the place. Here there will be a variety of public institutions and great quality living spaces that will fit right in with the variating urban spaces and the exquisite shore. The island will be a combination of the best from different parts of the city and bring joy for the citizens, local employees and tourists. Papirøen will in the future be the island of the city.

A WORLD THROUGH THE WATER
145 years ago two danish cadets steal some wine cuttings from the island of Madeira. The plants survive the seven month voyage back to Copenhagen and are planted out here in the yard. After just a short period of time the original vines are destroyed by a disease. The ones in a yard in Copenhagen are thriving, which resulted in the returning of the danish plant to Madeira. Due to the fact all this wine from Madeira originate from the very grape of Kuglegaarden’s yard, which still grows to this day on the land next to Papirø.

POPULARLY MONUMENTALISM
For 361 years the castle of Copenhagen was placed at Slotsholmen due to its great location and therefore being the center of the city. An island with endless tales, which worked as a catalyzing and anchoring factor in the evolving of the urban development of Copenhagen. Our proposal for Papirøen conveys the same idea as a public gathering point – a place with history. We want to create a place with versatile motives and bring a sense of warmth which will be inviting the rest of the city.
This community will embrace a luxuriant and sheltered inner garden without repelling the visitors or seem as clingy to the residents. This is a place of particularity with open asymmetrical spaces giving the community an individualistic feel which is interconnected to the island’s industrial side that is more in the monumental scale. This will be the story of something historical, traditional and the unknown being superimposed in a wondrous sense representing the life of Copenhagen.

“The city block has a good foundation as a settlement. Here’s a sympathetic reinterpretation of the classic Copenhagen city block with a new division of the lateral and horizontal layers. The proposal appears to be very thorough, sympathical and the judges have kept an eye on it throughout the entire evaluation process. – judge’s comments

MEETING THE WATER
Copenhagen’s shoreline has for centuries been shaped after the the city’s needs and business’ – from fishing, military defence to industrial machinery. Today the city’s relation to the sea is predominantly pragmatic and obsolete regarding the functions of the quay. This is also the situation for Papirøen. With the new master plan we want to create a unique urban environment with the numerous qualities which only can be found by the sea.
The ambition is simply to design an urban coastline that can accommodate all lifeforms of the sea – swimming, sailing, playing, fishing, running, promenading, rolling and kissing. In a balance between the industrial and the human we will unfold the edges of Papirøen to a eventful and sensual transition between the island and the water.
