THE KNOT

With The Knot, THIRD NATURE wants to localize, emphasize and expand a landscape connection through Lemvig city, thereby tying the fjord and the city together. We have created a playful, sensory landscape with a winding promenade that moves all the way from the historic town to the water’s edge by the fjord and around the old docking area.

THE CITY AND THE SEA
During a cold February in 1825, the sea breaks through the dikes at Agger. At once, the Lim fjord changes to a canal and lays the foundation for the commercial potential of Lemvig, the hidden pearl of West Jutland. The storm flood of 1825 is one of the most significant natural events in the country because the new connection with the outside world changes the entire foundation of Lemvig and the region. Today, natural change is knocking again at Lemvig’s door, with the immediate challenges of more severe weather and rising seawater levels. At the same time, the harbor trade and the fishing industry have stilled and Lemvig is therefore currently building a new narrative about itself. Inspired by the history and the lifeblood of the city – access to and from the sea – we will turn the city’s challenges around to continue the story of Lemvig. By joining the east and west ports together in a new promenade, the experience of the city on the edge of the water can be enhanced, and allows the wing to draw one cohesive nature course.

With this connection and revitalization in mind, new potential synergies and cross-pollination are created between rising seawater levels, the strength of the city’s will, new business, tourism and education at the port!

THE MASTERPLAN CONTAINS

// Promenade connection between east and west.

// Crab reef and dune areas: two new natural areas.

// A winding promenade with views of the dock and sea.

// Workshop facilities and storage area built into the promenade.

// A new trade school in connection with the dock.

CONCEPT
“Knot, node or plug is a joining or securing method, where a knot is typically characterized by twisting two ropes (rope ends) (e.g., square knot, flag knot etc.). In principle, there are infinitely many different knots, but it is limited how many can have a practical function. “- Wikipedia

The most important task of a knot is to add loose ends together; two loose ends tie together in a square knot, a pole and a loose rope end tie together in a timber hitch, for example. What does a knot look like on the dock? Which loose ends at the port must be tied together and how?

TOWARD NEW NATURES
The project’s greatest ambition is to localize, emphasize and expand a landscape connection through Lemvig city, thereby tying the fjord and the city together. For two centuries, Lemvig has sought to exploit the potentials that lie between a natural sheltered harbor and the sea beyond. Out of both necessity and business savviness, Lemvig has maneuvered throughout the ages.

With a well-developed ear for need and change, the city’s front towards the sea – the harbor – has always been the physical place where the city’s development could be seen, stirred and determined by the city’s residents and businesspersons. The brief calls for a development in several phases: First, a new promenade connection between east and west and then a comprehensive plan across the entire East Harbor. The main task is to link the eastern port, the fjord and the rest of the city, as well as pointing to new potentials for a sustainable future for the port and the city’s connections.

Lemvig_web13

The project is based on an acknowledgment of the East Harbor as a missing piece in a transformation of Lemvig port from a fishing port to a more experience-based economy. The goal is that the masterplan organizes the interaction between the historical and the future. Can you renew and maintain at the same time? It is assumed that the dock will be preserved to continue the port industry that ship repair and shipbuilding imparts. Continued activity on the dock emphasizes the character of the harbor as an active and living area.
It is of great importance to be able to sense the harbor’s many layers by ensuring  maximum accessibility across the harbor in the form of a new promenade. The masterplan is based on the new connection of the promenade, which will link the west harbor with the eastern port as a length of rope between fjord and city. This rope starts around Luna, and ties a “knot” around the dock to create a new frame around the old profession. The necessary workshops and storage facilities are nestled under a winding promenade that starts at the fjord, dives up to the city and creates views towards both the city, Lemvig church, and the fjord.

Lemvig_web54

This promenade winds in one uninterrupted movement around the dock and underneath itself in a knot movement, ending at the fjord again. This ‘grip’ around the dock ensures accessibility around the dock’s functions so that it can be experienced from different positions and heights. At the same time, the dock is designated as a central hub that connects the east and west ports with the city. The promenade continues towards the skate park and the upcoming Climatorium north of the skate park.
The promenade is also a reason to graft new nature onto the adjacent areas of the East Harbor. Rock reefs as well as green “dunes” are grafted on different sides along the promenade! In this way, the promenade becomes a kind of red thread that connects industry, education, nature and experiences together in a new landscape connection through Lemvig harbor.
