THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COPENHAGEN

With our proposal for the Children’s Hospital Copenhagen, we bridge the gap between the natural and urban setting and propose a contemporary solution for a hospital for children, adolescents and pregnant women. An innovative hybrid and catalyst of future treatment structures, that greatly adapts to the urban and scenic context.

AN ICONIC & HYBRID CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COPENHAGEN
The new Children’s Hospital Copenhagen becomes a benchmark in the city – where a fusion and exchange between a highly specialized building structure and a unique playful universe becomes an expression of the society’s ambition and capacity. Our vision for the Children’s Hospital Copenhagen sought to bridge the gap between the natural and the urban setting and thus form a contemporary hybrid that becomes more than just the sum of its parts. The Children’s Hospital Copenhagen can become a catalyst for new and future institutions, and establish new positive treatment cultures, break the contrasts in the urban situation and generously give back to the city by the virtue of its own good example.

The Children’s Hospital is placed in the middle of an urban melting pot, with diverse atmospheres and multifarious structures and scales, complexity and contrasts. In one structural

concept, the hospital will embrace the whole site by adapting to the green stretch from Skateparken, Amorparken, Fælledparken and the city’s infrastructure, and take part in the local urban space and human flow. With an open and inviting terrain the Children’s Hospital Copenhagen creates a present and friendly environment, where user groups – passers-by, patients, relatives, employees, students and researchers – can gather, and the hospital facilitate exchange between everyday life, health, research, knowledge and science.

The Children’s Hospital Copenhagen meets children at eye level by creating a poetic, playful and imaginative universe, meanwhile solving highly specialized technical and logistic demands that a modern hospital calls upon. The ambition is to give irreplaceable experiences and create the best conditions for young patients and their families, but also the employees, students and visitors.

NATURE, ART & A PLAYFUL LANDSCAPE

When the newest research shows, how humans thrive best in green, playful and adventurous environments, it becomes our focus in the creation of Children’s Hospital Copenhagen. As Denmark’s first Children’s Hospital, the special story line and DNA is to recreate multiple landscapes, cultures, atmospheres and urbane spaces found across the country, to ensure spaces everybody can relate to. The landscape is formed to promote mobility, movement, playful and learning environments, but also offer spaces to retreat, reflect and regain energy. At all levels, from the

central rooms to the small units, the landscape acts in different variations of forms and expressions. Along the building’s terrain, the roof gardens at the building’s notches, atriums and double-high-ceilinged oasis’ in the building’s pockets, one will find playful landscapes and interior, raised beds, art installations and much more. The purpose of these intuitive rooms and forthcoming atmospheres is to create possibilities for life-affirming breaks, that encourage and variates the everyday life at the hospital.
